Twists and Turns

This morning, while drinking my coffee I found myself reflecting over my past and thinking about the time I spent in live theatre as an equity stage manager. I was thinking about how much I enjoyed the theatre when it was empty a couple of hours right before the show. I was going over all the various plays from the dramas, to the comedies and even several musicals I managed.

You’re properly wondering why the podcast is about live theatre today.

Well, I wanted to talk about the surprising twists and turns that storylines take, and how they create motivating, exciting and intriguing plots.

A better example might be the movies. We go to the movies to see our hero face challenges and struggles, and come out on the other end victorious! I believe that is one reason we love comic book hero’s like The Avengers.

Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, and Black Widow.

In the new Avengers movie, Age of Ultron, they are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. The ultimate test! The fate of the planet! Oh my! I haven’t seen the movie, but I can imagine the challenges and struggles they’ll face.

We love this stuff. Even as adults, we eat it up. I know this is over the top for us average everyday Joe’s, but, most of us pray daily for an uncomplicated life’s.

  • I hope there’s no line at the grocery store this afternoon.
  • I pray the red light doesn’t catch me.
  • Man I hope no one in the office speaks to me today!

You have to ask yourself, how can you have a fantastic journey while living an uncomplicated life? You have to engage!

While I finished my coffee I Googled the lives of just a couple of my mentors. I found lives filled with conflict and defiance on one side, while balanced with great rewards on the other side.

The universe we live in is filled with questions, endless series of trials and never ending strife. Isn’t it time we dive in headfirst and just live full out?

Take time today to turn around look at head-on at the conflicts in your life. Are there hidden opportunities within them? How are they shaping your life? Your character? What’s your story today? What could it be tomorrow if you were living your life to its fullest and without fear?

Think about it. Live your life to your fullest potential, and start living your dreams today!

Until next time,

You’re Invited to Celebrate

May today be the best day of your life … until tomorrow!

To make that happen don’t dwell on your past mistakes or make negative judgement of others. Save your energy. Saving energy usually refers to being green. I’m all for being green: reduce, reuse and recycle!

Let’s talk about saving your personal energy.

Negative thoughts and actions zap your energy. Playing the victim, worrying, losing control, freaking out, gossiping … all of these actions are “energy vampires.” They suck the positive right out of you!

You should avoid them at all cost.

Instead, get enough sleep, exercise, eat right, stay focus on your goals and dreams. Continue your self-education. Read motivational books. Listen to inspiring speakers. If you stay focused on these things you don’t have time for any of the negative stuff.

Legendary author and speaker, Tom Peters tells us to, “Celebrate what you want to see more of. Celebrate your dreams, celebrate your goals and your achievements to date.”

I like that idea. Celebrations make us feel extravagant!

Before Tom Peters encouraged us to celebrate, in 1975, Three Dog Night wanted us to, “Celebrate, and dance to the music,” and in the 80’s, Kool & The Gang told us to, “Celebrate good times.”

They were all like-minded people dishing out great advice.

Why is celebrating so important? It’s important to celebrate our achievements because we remember emotionally charged events better. The stronger the emotions connected to the event, the greater the effect on our memory. By celebrating our wins we are able to overcome our failures faster.

Life has so much to offer us. Today, is a fresh start, a new beginning, applaud yourself. Pay tribute to what you have accomplished and will accomplish.

I want you have big dreams and big visions for your life! Because BIG keeps you going, growing and celebrating. The bigger your dreams the more faith and passion they’ll take to reach. Don’t give up. Never give up. This is your life.

I worked in live theatre for several years. Trust me why I say, this is not a dress rehearsal. This is the main stage. Places have been called. The curtain is up. And you are the hero. The spot lights are on. Time to come out of the wings. Do not let anyone upstage you! Fulfill your purpose. Fulfill your destiny.

You have everything you need to see every one of your dreams come true. Do not short change yourself with negative talk. Lift yourself up and celebrate. Celebrate todays successes and get ready for tomorrows triumphs!

I leave you with 4 questions to help you to take action now …

  1. What can I do in the next 5 minutes to move myself closure to my goal?
  2. If I don’t do it, what will happen? If I do do it, what will happen?
  3. What have I accomplished in the past 24 hours that I can celebrate right now?
  4. What, Where and Who would you like to celebrate with? — call them and celebrate!!!

Until next, Live Bold. Be Di’namic!

It’s your turn. What do you think? Are you living a bold life? Are you celebrating your accomplishments? If not, why not?

4 Reasons to Unplug

Ep 12

We have so many things pulling at us on a daily basis for our attention. Ringing smartphones, email notifications, Twitter and Facebook messages, text beeps, and mobile devices that are always on and always beeping with push notifications.

We are connected to so much technology and streaming information in so many different ways, it feels endless. Everyone and everything wants our attention, we’re engaged, in a hurry, multitasking, and living in a blur. We’re being told these devices allow us to get “that much more done” but at the end of the day we feel like we’re getting little to nothing done.

Its time.

We need to ‘unplug’ if we expect to achieve our life’s purpose, our goals, and reach our dreams.

It can be hard staying focus on our dreams, goals and action plans. Putting off instant gratification for long term fulfillment isn’t always easy. I know, Facebook is calling. Trust me, you don’t have to answer.

When I was growing up we didn’t have an answering machines. The phone rang and you had to answer it or hope they called back. If we were having dinner my dad wouldn’t let us answer it. He’d say, “If it’s important, they’ll call back.”

If you’re going to make your dreams come true, you’re going to have to stay focused and committed. Let them call back.

We all need to take time to realign our daily routines and use our energy to focus on whats important and limit it to what’s not.

Tony Robbins has said, “The only limit to your impact is your imagination and commitment.”

Its time to make a commitment to ourselves.

We all make excuses as to why we haven’t complete a task or reached our goal. Maybe we want to write a book and we “can’t find the time.” Did you know that, eighty percent of the time, finding the time is the excuse.

Here are 3 more ‘did you know’s’:

  • TV viewing eats up over 6 days worth of time per month! Thats approximately 145 hours. What could you accomplish in 145 hours?
  • The American commuter spends between 50 to 100 hours a year stuck in traffic, depending on where they live in the nation … and …
  • Americans spend unto 23 hours per week online and texting.

Just adding the TV time to the online and texting time you gain back 237 hours a month in your schedule! We need to stop telling ourselves, we don’t have time. We’re lying to ourselves and everyone else.

Let’s find away to utilize the time we’ve been given. Use drive time to listen to DVD’s to continue your education. Turn the TV off and invest those hours into writing that book or working on other dreams you have.

Create a habit of only using the Internet for research and limit your time for that. Have a “to-do list” so that you don’t go down rabbit holes.

Realign your TV, drive time and online time into your dreams and goals, create an action plan, brake it into baby steps, and do something everyday!

Can you see your dreams and goal begin to take shape?

Learn to be loyal and committed to yourself! Stop being a zombie to other peoples dreams and goals!

Here are 4 reasons to unplug and take action:

  1. Life is happening right in front of you … Engage!
  2. Unplugging promotes creativity … Build your own dream.
  3. Life is still about person-to-person eye contact … Social Media is not social!
  4. You’ll have more time for your goals and your dreams!

This is how successful people make a difference in their lives. Make a difference in your life. Make it happen today!

Until next time, Live Bold. Be Di’namic!

It’s your turn. What do you think? Can you unplug for the next hour? What about 3 hours? Now unplug for a full day and then for a full week?

Some people like transcripts, some find them to be a waste of time. What do you think? Are transcripts useful, or pointless?

Challenges are Opportunities

I read a quote from an unknown source this week, “Be thankful for each new challenge, because it will build your strength and character.”

I love the quote. It made me think … challenges not only build our character, but are often opportunities in disguised.

Challenges present opportunities to discover more about ourselves, and what we’re really made of. They reveal our true desires and passions, and help prioritize our dreams and goals.

Let’s look Steven Spielberg, he was rejected from USC, twice. This is the same man that brought us “Shindler’s List,” “Jaws,” “E.T.” and “Jurassic Park” — He couldn’t get into the film school. Having USC turn him down didn’t destroy his dream. In fact, it might have lit a fire under him.

So it doesn’t matter who you are, from the CEO to a small business entrepreneur, we all face challenges. The real key is how we manage them.

Stephen King‘s first novel, Carrie, was rejected 30 times. He faced his challenge and today his books have sold almost 400 million copies, many of which have been turned into feature films, miniseries, television shows, and even comic books. He could have quit, and he could still be teaching high school English.

Do we run or do we find the opportunities buried within the challenge? Someone said, “Do you see difficulties in every opportunity or opportunities in every difficulty?”

Challenges are great tests of our determination. They also teach us how to control our emotions. Do we stay calm, positive, relaxed, and in complete control no matter what is happening around us. Or do we freak out!

The more control we have over our emotions the better we’ll be at handling what life hands us. If you take a look around yourself, you’ll notice that hot heads don’t tend to go far. It is the level headed individuals that climb the ladder.

Next time your faced with a challenge here are 3 things to focus on:

  1. Stay calm, positive, relaxed, and in complete control … no freaking out.
  2. Remain committed to your original goal, by asking yourself, “Am I really afraid?”
  3. Ask yourself, “If I don’t finish what I started, will I regret it in the future?”

For whatever reason, most of us see a challenge as a negative thing. Change your perspective and it will change your attitude. Don’t be a victim.

Here are 4 questions to ask to help change your perspective:

  1. What is in my control? What is out of my control?
  2. How can I use this to strengthen me?
  3. Could this actually be a blessing in disguise?
  4. Will any of this matter in 3 years or even 14 months?

I’ll leave you today with three more thoughts on how to build your character:

  1. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Our mother’s taught us this lesson.
  2. Think and act on long term decisions, not short term gratification.
  3. Always let your values guide you to do the right thing, even if no one sees you doing it.

Until next time, Live Bold and Be Di’namic!

It’s your turn. What do you think? How many opportunities have you had recently hidden in challenges? Do you remain calm, positive, and relaxed in the middle of a challenge? Do challenges reveal strengths that you never knew you had?

Some people like transcripts, others find them to be a waste of time. What do you think? Are transcripts useful, or pointless?

Failure Is Not Fatal

Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.”

We all have bad days. Down days. Chicken Little days when we feel like the sky is falling. Days when we lose our focus, our strength, and even our passion. Thankfully this is all temporary.

Instead of letting those days sink in, take over and become more discouraging to the point of depression, shake it off.

Sometimes you have to put a smile on your face, throw your shoulders back, hold yourself up from your core and start focusing on your goals and move on, forward and up!

No matter what life hands you … you only have two options. Give up or keep going. If you give, the story is over and we all know what happens … nothing. Which makes for a lousy book.

You are a better writer than that. You are writing your story! Choose to ‘keep going’ with passion and enthusiasm. Give us a story ending with a dynamic twist!

Consider the following three questions to keeping you focused, unstuck and going:

  1. What feelings are you focusing on?
  2. Are you being honest with yourself, or making excuses?
  3. What do you need to change to be able to move forward?

Until next time, Live Bold and Be Di’namic!

It’s your turn. What do you think? Have you had a Chicken Little day recently? How did you recover from it?
